I learned how to make a catalogue and work with some of the design tools in that are used in the program. One of the biggest challenges was trying to figure out how to add a print button, which from the research I did is impossible. This seems like something that could be implemented into the program fairly easily to rival catalogue building programs since making catalogues seems to be a useful feature of Indesign. Not being able to add some functionality from programs like flash and not having functionality for certain things necessary for a digital catalogue hinders the program a bit for the project I am working on. I do like the assistance it adds with the design aspect such as alignment assistance to be able to keep consistency across multiple pages and spacing. the fact that you can set up a master page for the rest to base off make it easier for making a catalogue since you can keep the same page design consistent without having to make very page. Over all it has been a great tool for making a catalogue aside from a few options that were necessary for this project.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-51563530415707074482014-06-04T11:47:00.000-07:002014-06-04T11:47:59.560-07:00Personal developmentI got sidetracked with some work so I didn't get around to practicing much more drawing. I have also been working on the RPG tutorial some more from here which is really great if you have interest in creating an RPG game in Unity. I have a checkers game on the go as well which I need to do some more research on, I have some assets made from when I started working on it a month or two ago for onegameamonth.com. Today I was trying out the tablet I got at work recently so I could get some practice in and I also got some more drawing practice done as well. I haven't gotten around to uploading any progress yet, I will when I have some more complete work to show.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-64910292527114659692014-05-08T11:23:00.000-07:002014-05-08T11:23:13.501-07:00Drawing practiceI just finished drawing my self portrait for my starting point so that I can gauge my progress later. I will probably take my sketch book home on the weekend and scan anything done that week that isn't just doodles and technique practise. So I will be uploading my self portrait tomorrow or Saturday most likely. Until then I will keep any progress updated here and likely edit this post once I have the image to post along with this as well.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-5177835857990700012014-05-06T09:54:00.001-07:002014-05-06T09:54:17.890-07:00Drawspace.com practiceI have a lot to update that I may not get around to updating quite yet, but I will at least update what I am currently doing to keep my blog active. I am going to practice my drawing again, I was doing a drawing a day for about a month or 2 before and ended up busy with other work. Those drawing can be seen on my Deviantart page under the daily drawing section. With Drawspace you can learn the basics and far beyond through the courses that they offer for free on their website. So starting today I will be drawing as much as possible to try and improve my drawing skills, and hopefully keep up a daily regimen to improve it. I'll be posting some drawings on Deviantart when I get into the more complicated stuff so i'm not just throwing up all the small things like scribbles.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-44666340357935431592012-09-21T04:39:00.002-07:002012-09-21T04:40:15.660-07:00Spectrum Blade Updates 2Been experimenting with adding the door and key functionality to my game from the French game. It seems to be working okay so far, I will be uploading an updated version of my game soonTanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-88878956289696895342012-09-16T15:10:00.002-07:002012-09-21T04:40:09.626-07:00Spectrum Blade Updates 1Started working on my game again today, since its has so much that still needs to be tweaked and added. Before I even get around to designing the rest of it, this is the main concern, though I have come up with some ideas for some of the other planets. So today I fixed the lava, so its not just a flat plane, now it is a flowing pool of lave that really adds a lot to it, it looks so much better now!! Props to Sean Beck on YouTube for the Lava package, it can be found here for anyone else who may need help and also for giving him credit for this. I think I can still make it look a bit better since I'm not sure how it he got it a different texture around the edges, but I'll just mess with that another time.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-48040416559491373602012-09-14T06:21:00.003-07:002012-10-03T15:06:59.777-07:00French Game English VersionStarting to translate the French game back to English, here is the progress so far, I realized that i'm going to have to change some of the images as well, and fix some of the screen proportions for those who have a laptop again for this as well. Also with a bit of messing around some more, I realized that I need to fix the sensitivity again, I could have sworn I did that already, but I guess I gotta change it again.
I already got my feedback form Adam, he gave me some pretty good feedback. Since my I was still having troubles with my main character, I met with Crystal, who is the 3D teacher and she helped my figure out what was wrong with it. It was the IK/Fk handles that were messing up the arms, it was keeping the arms stuck out. So to fix this problem, the IK/FK handles were deleted and the animation was baked right onto the bones. This fixed the problem and the character moved fine after this. The boss character was fixed as well since he had the same problem.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-60803862385796560702012-03-30T17:30:00.000-07:002012-04-14T17:49:26.718-07:00Game Design (Spectrum Blade) Week 12So I've learned a lot since last time, about Unity and actually business/ work related information. Since I haven't really kept in touch with those who were doing 3D models for me, things aren't all turning out the way I expected. That's kind of my fault though, I guess I should have been checking in on them and made sure things were going smoothly and to what I wanted, just something I need to keep in mind for the future. Also I found out that my main character was really messed up, the most out of all of them. I was having trouble with character and models before having extra models or objects that weren't actually in the model I exported. The villagers had an extra set of arms, the boss Hermes had extra arm blades that weren't suppose to be there and some other issues. After some digging around on the Internet I discovered that this was an empty transform problem. If the transform wasn't actually deleted from the Outliner in Unity, the piece of the model that were deleted show up in model when it is imported into unity. I fixed this by going into the Maya file and deleting them from the outliner and everything went fine. Another problem was the texture on the main character, it was all over the place and had a weird shadow to it. I figured out that this was just a matter of deleting the history in the Maya file by going to delete by type > history. I believe it was a certain one that fixed it, there is a couple options for deleting history, not quite sure which it was. Another problem with the main character was his arm, they were stretched out and ballooned in the middle which was really weird. I gave this back to the 3D modeller, it was just the IK or FK handles that was messing it up. Once that was fixed he was fine, or so I had thought... It turned out that his arms were stuck out when I actually played the game, so whenever he ran through his animations for his particular action, he would continually have his arms stuck out. me and my teacher Suzanne both tried to figure it out, but neither of us could. She did help me figure out an important problem however. Since I had imported my mine shaft earlier I couldn't figure out why the character was falling though it and the faces were disappearing. It was a simple matter of the normals facing the wrong direction, something I will keep in mind from now on. Since the normals were facing the wrong way, they would only show up facing the direction they were pointing. This was fixed by reversing the normals so they faced the right direction where the character would be. I will be doing a game pitch this weekend at Aimemediafest and hope that all goes well. I have been fixing up a game pitch presentation the past couple of days in preparation and will demo what I have so far. I will also be doing a play test for my game as well.
So this week I continued importing 3D assets and trying to figure out how to make things work properly. I got my finished villager in and working into the dialouge puzzle. The enemy character attacks my player and is able to do damage, but besides that I can't do damage to the enemy which doesn't help much. Besides that i'm just messing around with stuff and plan on putting the actual main character in soon.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-42144384832392074822012-03-02T16:15:00.000-08:002012-04-14T17:19:12.499-07:00Game Design (Spectrum Blade) Week 8

I made more of a variety in the huts by changing the color of them as well as there being more then just one version for variety that the 3D student did. I imported some of the 3D assets that the 3D students made. I imported the volcano and the mountains. I split the dialouge into 3 parts and spread it out across 3 villages. The 3 villages are set outside the mine, outside the mountains and the main village. I also added more textures to the environment. I tried getting the fight mechanics working in my game, but I can't seem to get them to work.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-49190522187523422072012-02-22T15:38:00.000-08:002012-03-07T19:42:22.181-08:00Game Design (Spectrum Blade) Week 7

This week I fixed up the animations on my dummy main character and worked on getting my character to face the right way. I found that it was in the maya file itself that was the cause of the problem. I had to change the direction the character was facing to -90 to fix the problem. It also worked once I re did the animations, and re-exported the character. I also had am getting the huts to look more hut like, the ones I had before were just tubes. They are now bulged out at the bottom and have variety, one of the 3D students fixed it for me. The designing of 3D assets seems to be going well, I'll be importing more of them soon and appreciate the help from the 3D students. I figured out how to get dialouge working, I have one dummy dialouge so far. I got help from a Game Design student from last year. I found sound effects for my game and am going to use some music that I designed before.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-20665605922830058852012-02-15T15:32:00.000-08:002012-03-07T19:28:34.976-08:00Game Design (Spectrum Blade) Week 6I added more variety to the village in height and added an instructions screen and button. I've been having troubles getting the GUI screens to centre in the middle, can't seem to figure out why yet. My main focus this week was to try to make a run animation for the character and get it to face the right direction. I was unsuccessful with getting the character to face the right direction, when I replaced it it got rid of it all together and when I imported the same one that was fixed the animations didn't work. I'm fairly certain that I will have to re-animate and export the character. I tried to get my character dialouge script working but was unseccesful, I couldn't figure out how to get it to work.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-8377219409401909342012-02-08T12:02:00.000-08:002012-03-07T20:51:14.993-08:00Game Design (Spectrum Blade) Week 5

I worked on making the dummy animation for my main character this week. I did all the animation and made him out of basic shapes like my fire enemy. For some reason when I imported my character into unity, hes facing sideways when I go into game mode, at least I got the animations working for now. I used some tutorials to help get my character working in unity, seems to work so far. I also fleshed out my story a bit more and reworked the artwork for my title screen and game over screen. My terrain wasn't interesting enough so I varied the terrain a bit to make it more interesting.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-29192189313373191352012-02-01T11:17:00.000-08:002012-03-07T20:39:32.503-08:00Game Design (Spectrum Blade) Week 4

The 3D assets are going fine, already got some platforms and environment assets and they look good. This week I designed my GUI and scripted it into my game. I plan on changing it later when the 3D model of my main character is done, but for now I got a digital GUI. I've also been experimenting with photoshop to create some title screena and game over screens. I have some designed with an eclipse and earth and designs.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-76985217689173037792012-01-25T10:35:00.000-08:002012-03-07T20:37:49.909-08:00Game Design Week 3

This week I worked on writing the character dialouge scripts. I also made a rougn map of my environment in Unity, might change it around later. I made a dummy animation of my small fire enemy, it went fine. I havn't done much modeling before, but for a rough it was good. I animated using the time line in maya and made my character out of simple shapes. I made an idle animation of the enemy bobbing up and down and a attack animation of to attack swipes.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-84703907544593526702012-01-18T10:28:00.000-08:002012-03-04T11:08:43.033-08:00Game Design Week 2

This is the end of Week 2 in my development of my game. Did some more sketches of my environment and characters for planning. Can't seem to upload too many pictures at a time here so I will put up a link to see all of them. Here you can find my Pictures of game development. I started working on my my Gantt chart recently as well to keep myself on a set schedule. This week I also started figuring out the colors for assets besides just sketches.
Got my designs colored and finished, will be starting production soon. This is the end of pre-production: asset list, character sketches, environment sketches, style guide, schedule and gantt and scale chart. I got someone to help me with a good sketch of my main character and teh sketches of the characters that will need to be modeled. I will also have ask the 3D class if they can help me make 3D assets, since I wont have time to do it all myself.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3477152656156848945.post-35254560384265765682012-01-11T08:49:00.000-08:002012-03-04T09:19:41.501-08:00Game Design Week 1

Just starting my 3D Game for Game design class, just finished Week 1 of progress. Been working on the sketches and planning for my game, its taking longer then I though that it would. I will post pictures of my sketches and desgins once I have them complete. May need some help with designs from a DIAN (Digital Animation) since im not that great at drawing i'm finding.Tanner Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827912232126753323noreply@blogger.com0
